Dental VisitFind out when you might need to seek the professional care of a dentist in Philadelphia.

It’s amazing how so many Americans really don’t take their oral health seriously. In fact, about one-third of Americans didn’t visit the dentist at all during the year. This is staggering, as everyone can benefit from seeing the dentist. So, just how often do you need to visit our Philadelphia dentists, Dr. Steve Gilbert and Dr. Carlos Velez?

Most healthy individuals who don’t pose an increased risk of cavities or gum disease can often get away with only coming in twice a year (every six months) for routine cleanings and exams. These visits are important because it truly is the best way to prevent oral health problems from manifesting, saving you a lot of time, money, and heartache.

During these visits, we will also provide your teeth with a deep-down and thorough cleaning, which is important for everyone (even the best at-home brushers). It’s normal for people to miss certain areas of their smile when flossing or brushing and plaque can quickly turn to tartar, which can increase your chances of gum disease if you don’t come in for regular dental visits. Once plaque has hardened into tartar you won’t be able to remove it yourself, only we have the tools to be able to chip away at the tartar to protect your teeth and your gums.

Once a year we will also run x-rays to get a more detailed and comprehensive look into the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. Through these x-rays, we can spot decay that isn’t visible to the naked eye, signs of gum disease, bone loss, an infection and a variety of other issues.

Of course, if you are someone who is at a high risk for cavities or other dental problems, then our Philadelphia general dentist will probably recommend coming in more often (maybe about every 3-4 months). Those at an increased risk for dental problems include:

  • Those with weak or compromised immune systems
  • Those who have had cavities in the past
  • Diabetics
  • Smokers
  • Those with gum disease
  • Pregnant women
